The Princess And The Mouse: History

Between 2002 and 2005, Alan Ayckbourn wrote four plays which were aimed specifically at very young children aged under eight years old. The aim was to encourage youngsters into theatre with a play written with a young audience solely in mind.

The first of these plays was a new adaptation of the famous fairy tale
The Princess And The Pea. The play was staged in the end-stage McCarthy auditorium at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, and featured puppets by Lee Threadgold. Unlike the plays which followed, The Princess And The Mouse is entirely self-contained and not a multi-part play.
